Although surgical fires are extremely rare, the devastating consequences are still severe. Every healthcare facility should educate and prepare their surgical staff on surgical fire prevention. When I was a nurse traveler at different facilities, some of the facilities required surgical fire education as part of the orientation process. Others considered it a rare occurence and did not even address the matter.
